Early Life
Pascal Wehrlein was born in Sigmaringen, Germany. He holds dual citizenship, as his father is German and his mother is from Mauritius. He began karting at the age of eight in 2003, competing primarily in Germany and quickly working his way up through the junior ranks before moving to single-seater racing in 2010.
Career
Wehrlein’s professional career began in the 2010 ADAC Formel Masters, which he won in his second season in 2011. He then moved up to the Formula 3 Euro Series, finishing as runner-up in 2012.
In 2013, he made a significant move to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) with Mercedes-Benz. He made history in 2014 by becoming the youngest driver to win a DTM race and followed this by becoming the youngest-ever DTM champion in 2015 at the age of 20.
This DTM success, combined with his role as a Mercedes junior driver, paved the way for his Formula 1 debut in 2016 with the Manor Racing team. Despite driving for a back-marker team, Wehrlein impressed by scoring the team’s only point of the season at the Austrian Grand Prix.
